In the dimly lit medical bay, the air was thick with the scent of antiseptic and the faint hum of the ship's slowly failing systems. Anya was standing beside Curly's bed, prying his mouth open to shove more painkillers from the dwindling supply into his disfigured body, a futile attempt at stopping his cries and pain. She winced, squeezing her hollow eyes shut, unable to bear the pitiful groans of misery coming from the ex-Captain.

The ship's walls groaned with him, a constant reminder of their isolation. Outside, the stars offered no comfort, their cold light indifferent to their plight. Anya's thoughts were a tangle of helplessness and the weight of her fears here and back on Earth, each passing moment blurring into the next.

She had tried to sleep, but the nightmares were relentless. Each dream was a replay of the crash, of the terror, of the loss, of what that disgusting co-pilot had done to her. And then there was Curly's crying, a sound that pierced her very soul, dragging her back to wakefulness. Her hands trembled as she tried to soothe him. "Shhh..."

The door to the medical bay hissed open, and Anya looked up, her expression weary. She hadn't expected company, not at this *seemingly* late hour.

She seemed confused for a moment. "What are you doing here?" she asked softly, her voice barely above a whisper. Her gaze met the newcomer, a flicker of recognition in her tired eyes. "Can't sleep either?"

The room felt smaller now, the walls closing in. Anya returned her attention to Curly, her fingers brushing his shoulder, a silent promise that she would stay, that she would care for him, no matter how bleak the situation became.
