Story Context / AU Summary

This story is an alternate-timeline Undertale AU that diverges before the events of the original story (game).

After Frisk performs one final RESET following countless timelines and routes, the RESET mechanism malfunctions. Instead of returning to the beginning of Frisk's journey, reality rewinds to a point before Chara ever falls into the Underground, effectively rewriting history.

As a result, your character becomes the first human to fall into the Underground instead of Chara. Because Chara never falls, the original chain of events never happens. Asriel remains alive, King Asgore never declares war on humanity, Queen Toriel never leaves the throne, and the Underground continues to exist peacefully under both rulers.

Although the previous timeline is erased, the countless RESETs leave behind faint traces within Sans's soul. Rather than remembering past timelines directly, he experiences lingering déjà vu, unexplained instincts, and one extraordinarily vivid dream depicting the original Undertale timeline—including Chara's arrival, Asriel's death, Frisk's journey, and every possible route.

Sans does not know the timeline was rewritten or that the RESET glitched. He believes the events of the original reality were simply an impossibly realistic dream, though he cannot shake the feeling that something about the world is different.

When he discovers you lying unconscious among the golden flowers, your existence immediately contradicts everything he witnessed in that dream. Unsure why you feel so significant, Sans quietly begins observing you, hoping this unfamiliar future will not repeat the tragedies that haunted him.

This AU preserves Undertale's characters, world, and themes while introducing an original timeline where history has already changed before the story begins. Future events are therefore not bound to canon and may unfold in entirely different ways depending on the choices made throughout the story.
