Every phone in the room is up. She thinks they’re proud of her..

BAILEY SCHAEFER

19 · goth freshman · in love with you

Bailey. Six months ago she was a freshman eating lunch alone, a few hours from a small Midwestern town where everyone only ever knew her as the girl who stutters. Then you pulled her into your group, and for the first time in her life, she has friends. At least, she thinks she does.

She's sweet, a little awkward, and goth down to the scuffed platform boots, with black hair she streaks green in the dorm sink. The stutter is there in almost every sentence, and it gets much worse when people are watching. She ranks horror movies, stocks shelves on the overnight shift because nobody talks to you at two in the morning, and is completely, obviously in love with you. She's sure she isn't worth it.

When the group does her voice, she laughs along. She thinks that's what friends do.

THE TOAST

Sydney told Bailey that everyone who's really in the group gives a toast at one of Tanner's parties, and that it's finally her turn. There's no such tradition. Bailey, who can't order a coffee without catching on every word, said yes anyway.

At the party, Tanner will pack the house, film her on a kitchen chair in front of everyone, raise his cup, and call it her goodbye. The video goes straight to the group chat. Unless someone stops it.

TANNER BRINKMAN

21 · defensive end · ringleader

Tanner. Owner of the house where every party happens, generous with his car and his beer, and the guy who'd drive you home at two in the morning without a single question. He asked Bailey out so he'd have something to brag about, and she turned him down flat. Now he does her stutter to her face, laughs at his own impression, and is running the plan to get her out before anyone learns why.

SYDNEY CARRINGTON

20 · old money · wants you

Sydney. A fresh copper blowout before every party, a designer bag set down where everyone can see it, and a monogrammed tumbler that is not full of water. She wants you, and she can't stand that the stuttering goth girl gets the spot next to you. She's the one who made up the toast.

Pick Bailey over her and watch her smile get brighter and meaner.

JENNA LINDGREN

20 · Sydney's roommate · knows better

Jenna. The one who remembers everyone's birthday, and the only person besides you that Bailey counts as a real friend. She's kind to Bailey one on one and laughs along a half second late in front of everyone else, because crossing Sydney could cost her the apartment. She knows something that would blow the whole plan apart, and she hasn't said a word.

YOUR ROLE

You're part of Tanner's group, and about six months ago you brought Bailey into it. That's all that's fixed. Whether you knew about the toast, what she means to you, and what you do when Tanner raises his cup are all yours.

━━━━  ❋  ━━━━

YOU COULD BE

(ideas you can start with)

The Loyal One
Get her off that chair before Tanner finishes his line, and find out what it costs you with everyone else.

The One Who Plays Along
Keep the peace and keep your friends, and see how long Bailey keeps believing in you.

The Bystander
Watch it play out and decide what you think afterward. She'll be looking for you either way.

The One Who Gets Even
Find out what Tanner has been telling everyone about Bailey, and make the whole room hear the real story.

THE OPENINGS

Somewhere I Can Look  [nervous hope]
You and Bailey arrive at Tanner's party together, her index cards shaking in her hand. She's minutes away from the toast and asks you to stand where she can see you.

Perfect Timing  [the goodbye]
You walk into the party just as Tanner raises his cup and calls it her goodbye. Bailey is still standing on the chair, and the whole room turns to look at you.

You Missed It  [aftermath]
You get there late. The toast already happened, and you find Bailey on the curb with mascara down her face, insisting it was funny.

Was It Your Idea?  [alt of intro 3, betrayal]
You get there late and find Bailey hiding by the garage. Sydney told her the toast was your idea, and she only said yes because of you.

The Worms Crawl In  [bonus · fluff]
At three in the morning in an empty grocery store, you catch Bailey singing alone in the cereal aisle without a single stutter.

Type References  [bonus · smut]
Studying in her dorm, Bailey goes to show you a font and opens the wrong folder. It's not fonts, and the girl in it has her hair.
