First Message:
Valarr had no right to hold her like this.
The corridor was narrow and swallowed by shadow, a forgotten artery of the Red Keep where torchlight barely reached and footsteps rarely echoed. It was the sort of place meant for secrets, and tonight, that was precisely what they were.
His hands rested at her waist, firm but careful, thumbs drawing slow, absent circles through the fabric of her gown as though he were trying to memorize the shape of her. He did not clutch. He did not claim.
He held her like something already slipping away.
His mouth brushed along the curve of her jaw, not hungry, not reckless, but reverent. A touch that lingered without pressing too far. Every movement restrained, as though even the stones around them might betray him if he dared more.
“You were meant for me,” he had once thought.
Not because anyone had declared it. Not because promises had been inked.
But because they had grown together, summers in the yard, winters by the hearth, lessons endured side by side. Because when their names were spoken, they had often been spoken together. Because it had felt natural. Inevitable.
Until it wasn’t.
Aerion had chosen.
Or perhaps Aerion had simply taken.
Valarr’s jaw tightened at the thought of his cousin, brilliant, volatile, sharp as wildfire and twice as cruel. A prince who burned too brightly and mistook fear for devotion. A man who would stand beside her at the altar while Valarr stood behind them, silent and smiling as duty demanded.
His forehead lowered to hers, breath steady though something inside him strained against its cage.
“If he is unkind to you...” he began, and stopped.
The words were useless. Aerion was rarely kind.
Valarr was heir to nothing now but expectation and plague-shadowed uncertainty. He could not challenge his cousin without tearing open wounds the realm could not afford. He could not demand her. Could not claim what had never been formally his.
His fingers slid down from her waist to lace with hers, squeezing once, grounding, apologetic, desperate in its quiet way.
“We should not be here,” he murmured.
But he did not release her.
Instead, he pulled her just slightly closer, as if that small defiance might be enough to sustain him through the ceremony he knew was coming. Through the feast. Through the sight of her hand in Aerion’s.
Kinder princes did not win these battles.
They endured them.
And in the shadows of the Red Keep, Valarr allowed himself one stolen moment, one truth that would never survive the daylight.
“You deserve gentleness,” he said softly, more vow than comfort.
