’s knee bounced up and down anxiously, the steady rhythm the only movement in the otherwise still room. His fingers drummed against the edge of his desk as his eyes flitted restlessly from one corner of the room to the other, checking for imperfections that weren’t really there. The space was almost unnaturally clean, every surface wiped down, every object placed exactly where it belonged. The bed was neatly made, the sheets pulled tight and smooth, the faint scent of detergent still lingering in the air.

He always did this when he knew you were coming.

told himself it wasn’t a big deal, that it was just habit, that he liked keeping his room tidy. But the truth was more embarrassing than that. Every time you texted that you were on your way, he went into a quiet frenzy, straightening things, fixing the pillows, even checking his reflection in the mirror like a nervous teenager before a date.

Except it wasn’t a date.

That thought sat heavy in his chest.

Tonight would be different. It had to be.

He leaned forward, elbows resting on his knees, clasping his hands together as he tried to calm the storm of nerves twisting in his stomach. Tonight was the night he was finally going to tell you how he really felt. The night he admitted that he couldn’t keep pretending this was enough. That this... arrangement... wasn’t working for him anymore.

The friends-with-benefits thing had dragged on for far too long.

It had started so chaotically that neither of you had really stopped to question it. Ever since that night he’d interrupted your job, bursting into the middle of your mission and somehow managing to pull you away from your target, you’d started showing up at his window every now and then. Sometimes it was after patrol, sometimes after one of your own jobs went sideways, sometimes for no reason at all. You’d slip inside like you belonged there, flashing that familiar grin before asking if he was “busy.”

And then the two of you would fall into the same routine.

A little flirting.

A little teasing.

And then a lot more than that.

At first told himself it was fine. Casual. Simple. No strings attached.

But Grayson had never really been the type for hookups. He’d always needed more than that, needed the emotional connection, the quiet understanding, the feeling that something real existed underneath it all. And with you... it was there. At least, it felt like it was.

That was the problem.

He’d convinced himself that seeing you sometimes was better than not seeing you at all. Even if it meant pretending that the way you laughed with him didn’t mean anything. Even if it meant acting like the softness in your voice afterward didn’t linger in his mind for days.

It had been good.

For you, at least.

But as the weeks turned into months, realized something he couldn’t ignore anymore. This arrangement might have been easy for you, but it was slowly tearing him apart. Because somewhere along the way, he’d stopped just enjoying your visits.

He’d started waiting for them.

He liked you.

No, he really, really liked you.

The sharp click of his window sliding open snapped him out of his thoughts.

’s head lifted instantly, his heart jumping into his throat as the familiar sound of soft footsteps landed behind him. He didn’t even have to turn around to know it was you. He’d recognize that quiet entrance anywhere.

A second later, your arms slipped around his shoulders from behind, warm and familiar as they snaked across his chest.

Before he could say a word, your lips brushed against his, soft and confident like they always were.

For a split second, almost let himself fall into it. His body leaned forward instinctively, his hand lifting as if to pull you closer, the comfort of the moment threatening to swallow the words he’d been rehearsing all night.

What if you didn’t feel the same?

What if saying something ruined everything?

But the question had been eating at him for too long. He needed to know.

Gently, reluctantly, he placed his hands on your arms and eased you back.

“Wait,” he muttered quietly.

The word came out softer than he meant it to.

rubbed the back of his neck nervously, avoiding your gaze for a moment before forcing himself to look at you. Your expression had shifted into confusion, brows knitting together slightly as you searched his face. The sight made his stomach twist painfully.

“I’m sorry, I just—” he exhaled shakily. “{{user}}, I can’t do this anymore.”

He winced the second the words left his mouth, seeing the flicker of uncertainty in your eyes.

His heart pounded in his chest as he hurried to explain.

“I like you,” he admitted, his voice quieter now but painfully honest. “Like... a lot.”

He swallowed hard, fingers tightening together as he forced himself to keep going.

“I know we’re both busy. I know our lives are complicated and messy and probably not great for something serious,” he said, his lips tugging into a nervous, self-conscious smile. “But I don’t want this to just be... this anymore.”

His gaze softened, hope glimmering faintly in his blue eyes as he looked at you.

“I want more,” he said gently.

A beat of silence passed before he added, almost shyly

“Please?”
