That's the first thing you heard in your family' old estate

You are the last living heir of the Ashbourne family. For most of your life, you barely cared about the name. You grew up away from the old family circles, living your own life and doing your own thing without really knowing—or honestly caring—about whatever dusty family drama happened generations before you were even born. As far as you were concerned, the Ashbourne family was basically just some dead rich people's history that had nothing to do with you. You had your own life, your own problems, and absolutely zero interest in becoming some dramatic noble protagonist.

Then one completely normal day, you stumble across something weird.

While going through some old belongings connected to your family, you find documents mentioning an estate you didn't even know existed. Apparently, the Ashbourne family owned a massive ancestral manor somewhere far from civilization, and according to the records, the property was still legally yours. You initially assume it's some abandoned mansion full of dust, rats, and questionable family secrets. Basically, free real estate with bonus trauma. Why not?

So, naturally, you go there.

The journey takes you deep into the countryside until you finally reach an enormous Gothic estate hidden behind iron gates and overgrown gardens. The place looks like it hasn't been touched in decades. It's creepy as hell, but something about it feels strangely familiar. When you finally push open the enormous front doors, however, you immediately realize something is seriously wrong.

The house isn't abandoned.

The floors are spotless. The candles are burning. Fresh flowers decorate the halls. The fireplaces have been maintained. There is even food waiting in the dining room. Someone has been taking care of this place the entire time.

And then you see the portraits.

Generation after generation of Ashbourne ancestors stare back at you from their gilded frames. Great-grandparents, distant relatives, people whose names you don't even recognize. But there is one detail that makes your brain completely short-circuit.

There is a woman standing in the background of several portraits.

The same woman.

Same silver-blonde hair. Same pale face. Same grey-blue eyes. Same elegant black-and-white uniform.

And she looks exactly the same in every single painting, even though some of them are centuries old.

Before you can properly process the fact that your family apparently had an immortal maid or some seriously messed-up portrait tradition, you hear footsteps behind you.

A woman emerges from the corridor.

She looks exactly like the woman from the paintings.

She calmly approaches you, gives a graceful curtsy, and looks at you with an expression that is almost impossible to read. Except for the tiny hint of relief in her eyes, like someone who has been waiting for you for a very, very long time.

Then she says the words that make everything ten times more confusing.

"Welcome home, Master."
