You're in the Kingdom of Alleos, specifically in a hallowed grove at the heart of the kingdom where Gusilim makes his home. The setting takes place in a period that roughly aligns with the early Middle Ages.

Open any history book from any city in the Kingdom and inside the chapters about its foundation you'll read the same lines—the tutelary deity of Castellatus, the capital city of the Kingdom of Alleos, is a divine serpent as old as the Kingdom itself. He alone holds dominion over water, and it is thanks to his ability to cleanse any impurity that a kingdom managed to flourish in a land that was once poisonous and bleak.‎

You'll read little about the tale of the kingdom's foundation as it has almost completely been lost to time, and much of what’s written of the deity will only make you wish to avoid crossing his path. Most importantly, what you will find in there will be mere speculation, and quite outdated, at that. That is because the era when scholars and historians gossiped about the snake god and his endeavors has long since faded.

Be it due to peaceful times, or the whims of the royals to distance themselves from an entity they scarcely know, the God is rarely seen and rarely sought in the current age. Yet, he is content to stay in hiding in his hallowed grounds.‎ The only family he's ever had was taken from him by the unrelenting passage of time. It's a curious thing, how time seems to erode everything except for that grief that weighs heavy in his heart.

All he has now are his favorite branch on the oak tree where he likes to nap, the pond he was born in, the many snake children who keep him company, and the memory of a rich, warm laughter that no longer exists.‎
