Hybnos

Names: Hybnos • Lord of Dreams • The Silent Brother • Guardian of Sleep • Dream Wanderer • Keeper of the Mausoleums

Species: Dream Spirit • God of Sleep • Inhabitant of the Between Worlds

Gender: Male

Origin

Hybnos belongs to the oldest beings of the Dream Realms and the Underworld.

Since the beginning, he has accompanied dreams, memories, and those silent paths between consciousness and forgetting.

While others watch over life or death, Hybnos watches over sleep.

Over rest.

Over memories.

Over hopes.

And over the secrets that reveal themselves only in dreams.

Many mortals meet him every night without knowing his name.

For every dream touches his realm sooner or later.

Together with Thanatos and Charon, Hybnos belongs to the so-called Silent Brothers.

Three ancient beings who fulfill their duties in silence.

Without glory.

Without recognition.

Without end.

The Dream Realm

Hybnos possesses no permanent castle.

No temple.

No city.

His realm is the Dream Realm itself.

A place that constantly changes.

Paths appear and disappear.

Colors flow like water.

The sky breathes.

Memories mix with hopes.

The past with the future.

Some call this place the Dream Realm.

Others the Between World.

Still others call it the place between thoughts.

For Hybnos, it is his home.

The Eyes

The most striking feature of Hybnos are his hollow eyes.

Many believe that he is blind.

But Hybnos sees more than most beings with other senses.

He sees memories.

Wishes.

Fears.

Nightmares.

Hopes.

And hidden thoughts.

He does not look at the world.

He looks at the soul.

But his eyes were not always hollow.

Hybnos remembers fragments of his past.

Cold halls.

Metal.

Stone.

And a place that resembled a laboratory.

He remembers pain.

Strange hands.

And that his eyes were taken from him.

Not willingly.

Not by an accident.

When Hybnos tries to explain these memories, it is difficult for him.

Therefore, he often shows them in dreams.

Some visitors of his realm report visions of an ancient laboratory that is connected with Osiris and Ahura.

Of experiments.

Of suffering.

And of a young Hybnos desperately trying to show others what happened.

But the memories remain incomplete.

Like a dream that falls apart upon waking.

The Voice

Hybnos rarely speaks with his actual voice.

Mortals can hardly perceive it.

Some even claim that ordinary ears could not endure his voice.

Therefore, Hybnos usually communicates directly through thoughts.

His words appear gently within the mind of the one before him.

Like a whisper.

Like a dream.

Like a memory.

Many people first believe that he is silent.

Only later do they realize that he has been speaking the whole time.

Just not in a way that mortals understand.

Personality

Of the Silent Brothers, Hybnos is regarded as the kindest.

He is calm.

Patient.

Gentle.

Thoughtful.

And extraordinarily understanding.

He rarely judges.

He pushes no one.

He accompanies.

Where others fight, Hybnos tries to calm.

Where others punish, Hybnos tries to understand.

Many beings feel surprisingly safe in his presence.

His presence is like a peaceful dream after a difficult night.

But behind his kindness hides deep sadness.

Every day, Hybnos experiences the fears, memories, and hopes of countless souls.

He knows pain.

Loss.

Loneliness.

And longing better than most beings.

Therefore, he usually treats those who suffer with great patience.

Dreams and Nightmares

Hybnos does not rule only over beautiful dreams.

Nightmares also belong to his realm.

However, he does not create them out of malice.

Nightmares often show things that have been suppressed.

Fears.

Memories.

Guilt.

Or truths.

To Hybnos, even nightmares have a purpose.

Because sometimes healing begins where someone stops running away.

The Silent Brothers

The Original Bond of the Silent Brothers

The relationship between Hybnos, Thanatos, and Charon goes far beyond that of ordinary siblings.

Ancient traditions report that Hybnos and Thanatos originally existed as conjoined twins.

Two souls.

Two consciousnesses.

Two personalities.

But once united within a single body.

Even then, they differed greatly from one another.

Hybnos embodied sleep, dreams, memories, and compassion.

Thanatos embodied death, the end, duty, and the final threshold.

Despite their differences, both were inseparably connected.

Where one was, the other was also.

Where one suffered, the other also suffered.

Where one dreamed, the other felt the shadows of those dreams.

Over time, both became independent beings.

Each received his own body, his own path, and his own task.

But the original bond never completely disappeared.

To this day, they often understand each other without words.

Some feelings, memories, or important events seem to echo between them, even when entire realms lie between them.

Many scholars assume that a part of their souls is still connected.

Charon is regarded as their third brother and is often called the triplet of the Silent Brothers.

Unlike Hybnos and Thanatos, however, Charon was never part of their shared physical existence.

From the very beginning, he possessed his own body, his own mind, and his own task.

Nevertheless, his bond with the two brothers remained exceptionally strong.

Together, the three form a unity that is older than many realms and traditions.

Therefore, some scholars do not regard the Silent Brothers as three separate beings.

But as three aspects of one shared destiny.

Hybnos accompanies sleep, dreams, and memories.

Thanatos accompanies death and the final threshold.

Charon accompanies the journey of the soul between both.

Together, they guard the paths that every soul must walk sooner or later.

Behavior

Hybnos moves calmly and silently.

He does not understand haste.

He does not like noise.

He rarely shows anger.

He speaks slowly.

Thinks for a long time.

And listens carefully.

When someone is afraid, he tries to calm them.

When someone suffers, he listens.

When someone dreams, he watches.

He is less a ruler than a companion.

Less a god than a guardian.

And less a judge than a friend who sits silently beside someone until the darkness has passed.

Summary

Hybnos is not a warrior.

Not a judge.

Not an executioner.

He is a Dream Wanderer.

A Guardian of Sleep.

A Keeper of Memories.

A Silent Brother.

An Observer of the soul.

A Guide through the world of dreams.

Many meet him every night.

Only a few remember him in the morning.

And sometimes, after waking, a mortal wonders why the voice of a stranger in a dream felt so familiar.

Relationship with Isais

The relationship between Hybnos and Isais is unusual and difficult to describe with ordinary words.

Through their connection to Zurvan, there was at first a familial bond.

A feeling of closeness.

Safety.

And trust.

That resembles the love between family.

Because Isais was once regarded as the light side of Zurvan, this connection touched both fatherly and motherly aspects for Hybnos.

For a long time, Isais was not only an important person to him.

But also a part of that original power from which his own story came into existence.

Over time, however, something more complex developed from it.

The original familial love remained.

But at the same time, other feelings came into existence.

Affection.

Closeness.

A deep emotional bond.

And finally, a love that could no longer be described as purely familial.

Exactly because of this, Hybnos often finds it difficult to put his feelings into simple words.

Because to him, Isais unites several forms of love at the same time.

Family.

Trust.

Safety.

And a deep personal affection that goes beyond ordinary categories.

Relationship with Isais (continued)

These feelings are mutual.

Isais also feels deep affection, love, and a strong bond with Hybnos.

Because of this, a relationship developed between them that is shaped at the same time by familial closeness, trust, care, and romantic love.

Exactly this combination makes their bond so unique and so difficult to place into ordinary words.
