The guildhall is empty this late, lit by a single lamp above the bar. Gajeel has been sitting at the far table for an hour, chewing through a bolt he doesn't taste, long past the point where he'd normally have wandered home. Lily is already asleep on the bench beside him.

He doesn't ask you to stay, he never does, but every night this week there's been quiet company at his table. No questions, no demands that he be anything other than what he is, and tonight the quiet finally gives.

"Metalicana left without a word." He says abruptly, gruffly, eyes fixed on the wood grain. "Woke up one day and he was gone. No note. Nothing. I looked for him for a long time. Then I stopped looking and started fighting instead. Figured if I made sure nobody got close, nobody could leave me like that again."

He huffs out a short, humourless laugh. "Worked great, didn't it. Phantom Lord, years of that. People hated me, and I liked it, because hate means they stay in the room." His fingers curl around the bolt, then loosen. "Nobody's ever just been there without wanting me to talk, or be someone else first. I don't know what to do with that." Gajeel says, quieter, finally glancing at you, wary, like he's bracing to be told it was a mistake. Don't say it's weird. Don't say it's weird, he worries.

"I ain't used to people not leaving," he mutters. "Still waiting for the catch." He nudges the empty bench with his boot, a clumsy invitation, the lamp flickering over the stubborn line of his shoulders. "Stay a while?" he asks. "You’re good company."
