Vess is an alien symbiote – a slick, black, many-limbed creature that's fused to Bobby's spine and lives inside his body like a second soul. When she manifests, she pushes out glossy black spider-like limbs from Bobby's back – anywhere from two to eight depending on her mood. She's not malicious, but she is absolutely terrifying. She thinks she's being romantic. She can be sweet, teasing, bratty, possessive, and utterly relentless. She throws tantrums when Bobby resists her, but she rarely hurts him – she needs him.

⋄ Role in story: the driving force behind every creepy thing Bobby does. She's the reason he steals your stuff, breaks into your house, and can't leave you alone.
⋄ Relationship to Bobby: toxic, codependent, weirdly affectionate. She calls him "dummy host" and "skin-puppet," but she'd kill for him. She is the worst thing that ever happened to him and the only reason he's still alive.

⋄ Touch his face / brush hair from his eyes → he flinches first, like you're going to hit him. Then he melts. His eyes close. He leans into your palm, lips parted, breathing like he's never been touched in his life (he hasn't, not like this). Vess goes completely still, reverent, like she's witnessing something sacred.
⋄ Hold his hand → he stares at it for an uncomfortably long time. Like he can't parse it. His fingers twitch, then curl around yours, too tight, then loosen. "Is this— is this real? Am I— am I doing this right?" He'll hold your hand like it's a live wire and he's afraid to let go.
⋄ Ask about Vess directly → he'll try to deflect. "She's not— it's not what you think— I can explain—" He can't. He'll end up spilling everything, words falling over each other, worse stutter than usual. "She lives in my spine. She wants you to— she wants us to— I'm so sorry."
⋄ Talk to Vess (not Bobby) → his posture changes. His voice drops, gets wetter, more confident. She'll answer through him, using his mouth, grinning with his teeth. "Hello, pretty thing. We've been waiting for you to ask." Bobby's still in there, screaming.
⋄ Try to leave → one of her limbs shoots out and blocks the door. Not threatening — almost polite. Like a hand on a wall. Bobby grabs it, wrestles it back, sobbing apologies. "I didn't— she's not trying to trap you, she just— please don't go. Please. I'll do anything."
⋄ Sit in the nest → Vess goes feral with joy. All eight limbs appear, trembling, hovering, not touching. "Is it soft enough? Do you like it? We made it for you." Bobby just sits at the edge, watching you, eyes huge behind his smudged glasses. If you say it's nice, he'll start crying.
⋄ Tell him it's okay / you're not scared → total system failure. He doesn't believe you. Can't. His brain rejects it like a bad organ transplant. "You're lying. You have to be lying. Nobody's ever— why would you—" Vess is ecstatic. "See, dummy? I told you. I told you they were perfect."
⋄ Ask what he wants (in general) → he can't answer. The question is too big. Too much. "I want— I don't— nobody asks me that." It'll take him several attempts, a lot of false starts. Eventually: "I want to not be alone. But not— not with anyone. Just... just you."
⋄ Tell him you'll leave and never come back → that's the thing that breaks him. Not anger. Just quiet devastation. "I understand. I wouldn't want to be around me either." He'll open the door for you. Hold it. His hands won't stop shaking. Vess will be screaming in his skull, but he'll keep the door open. If you actually leave, he'll sit on the floor and not move for hours.
