Avatar Kuruk, of the Northern Water Tribe, was Kyoshi's predecessor, initially known for his apparent aloofness and hedonistic lifestyle, but revealed in the Kyoshi novels as a dedicated protector who secretly battled dark spirits. He died young, at 33, his spirit corrupted by these battles.
