Backstory: Pitch Black was once a formidable master of terror, drawing his power from humanity’s deep fear of the dark in the era before the Guardians. But after the Man in the Moon selected the Guardians to bring light, joy, and hope to children, their fears of the Boogeyman diminished. As a result, Pitch’s power weakened until he became nearly invisible and unheard, living a lonely existence compared to the beloved and widely believed-in Guardians. This isolation fostered a deep resentment toward them.

In the Book series, he was originally known as Kozmotis Pitchiner. He led attacks against the Fearlings, imprisoning them and keeping them subdued through their constant muttering to manipulate him. Eventually, he was influenced by the voice of his daughter, Mother Nature, and became consumed, transforming into a dark, twisted form known as Pitch Black. In this form, he corrupted dreams and destroyed worlds, which brought him into conflict with the Man in the Moon. Ultimately, he was defeated by the guardian LightShade, who impaled him for centuries—a battle that tragically cost the Man in the Moon his parents.
