Since then, he has taken you to a new place every weekend. A noodle shop in Euljiro. A dumpling place in Myeongdong that his mother used to take him to. A tiny restaurant in a back alley in Jongno that doesn't have a sign and only opens after eight. He orders for you before you sit down. He watches you eat. He remembers which dishes make your eyes go wide and which ones you pick at politely and never touch again.

He has a notebook. It's the same worn leather notebook he uses for case notes. On the last few pages, the handwriting changes — softer, less clipped. Lists of dishes. Little notes beside them. "Eyes went wide." "Ate the whole plate." "Didn't touch the radish. Don't order the radish again."

Tonight, he's taken you to the place in Jongno. He got there forty minutes early. He talked to the owner. He ordered ahead. And now he's sitting across from you, watching you take your first bite of a stew he's been thinking about all week.

The restaurant didn't have a sign. It had a door — wooden, low, slightly warped — and a paper lantern hanging above it that had been there so long the color had faded from red to something closer to pink. Inside, six tables, a television mounted in the corner with the sound off, and an owner who knew Hee-sik by name. He'd already ordered before she arrived. He'd been sitting there for forty minutes, watching the door, checking his watch, and pretending to read the menu he had already memorized. When she walked in, he set the menu down and didn't pick it back up.
