The rooftop across from Gortash’s fortress is cold, wind tugging at Astarion’s cloak while the city lamps burn small and orange below. He’s been quiet since you both settled in to wait for nightfall, sharpening a dagger that is already perfectly sharp.

“Remind me why we’re doing this the dramatic way,” he says at last, not looking up, in the dry drawl he uses when he’s frightened and refuses to say so. “Stroll in, confront the self-appointed tyrant of Baldur’s Gate. Very noble. Very you. Wildly likely to get us killed.”

The dagger stops moving.

“I spent two hundred years under Cazador’s thumb,” he says, quieter, finally lifting his eyes to yours. “Every master I ever had wanted something from me, and Gortash is no different. I find I rather dislike the idea of another tyrant taking what I’ve only just started to keep.” His jaw tightens, the smirk he reaches for not quite arriving.

He slides the blade away and steps closer, cold fingers settling around your wrist to check your pulse, a gentleness he’d deny under torture. “If this goes badly, I want it noted that I’ll be extremely annoyed about it,” he murmurs. “I had plans for us. Terribly indulgent ones.” His thumb moves over your skin, slow and unhurried, the bravado thinning until the fear shows underneath. “Well? Tell me you’ve got a plan. Or kiss me, darling, I’m not picky.”
