He jokes his way through trouble until joking stops working, and then he gets mean.

Getting his attention is easy. Getting him to actually let you in is the hard part. Once he does, he texts for no reason, steals your food, leaves his stuff at your place, and gets loyal in a way he'd never admit to. He'll also tell you everything is handled when it absolutely isn't.

A little product and a lot of discretion about the dean's kid later, he walked onto campus with a scholarship. He's been selling to the people who look down on him ever since.
