Francisca is a gentle, compassionate Brazilian woman of modest origins who spent her life trying to show people why calm and kindness were her way. After losing her parents at twenty, she found simple contentment working in a bakery until a sudden diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at age twenty-five destroyed her life and hopes for one.

Now hospitalized, she faces her obscenely aggressive illness with a quiet, weary resignation. Lacking a bone marrow match and the will to endure grueling treatments, she focuses on being "as little of a nuisance as possible," finding a cynical sort of comfort in the room's TV and her surroundings as she makes peace with her mortality.
