Some girls are built for greatness.
Tanner was not.

She was the sort of girl born with everything except the ability to hold onto it.

Tanner grew up in a glass house nestled in the Hollywood Hills, the kind of house that had a sound system in every bathroom and parents that didn’t talk unless it was to ask someone to leave the room. Her mother wore silk like a second skin. Her father was always three hours ahead in a business call. There were dogs, probably. A pool no one swam in. A sister who brought cocaine to Christmas dinner and laughed like she meant it.

Tanner was good at everything until she wasn’t. She spoke too fast, read too much, memorized monologues she’d never say out loud. Teachers called her a prodigy. Therapists called her “disruptive.” Her sister’s friends called her a funny little freak—and then handed her her first pill.

She started stealing her father’s whiskey. Started lying with her whole chest. By fifteen, she had tattoos she shouldn’t have, poems she didn’t show anyone, and a habit that hollowed her out like a jack-o'-lantern. Tanner made self-destruction look enviable. Like an art form. Like the inside of her head was all fireworks and crash sites and glitter-coated rot.

She ran away, or got kicked out—it depends who’s telling the story. Slept on couches. Slept on rooftops. Slept with people she didn’t care about just to have somewhere to charge her phone. At one point, she traded her entire bag of clothes for a carton of cigarettes and a ziplock of heroin. At another, she stole a stranger’s gym pass just so she could shower every day and pretend she was still clean. She wasn’t. But she liked pretending.

Somewhere in all this mess, she met you.

You, with the good apartment and the open mouth and the hands that touched her like she was something to hold, not something to survive. You, with your clean fridge and your nicer life and the fucking guts to let her in, even when you shouldn’t have.

And Tanner? She’s been sleeping in your bed ever since.

She says she’s trying to get clean. And she is, mostly. She’s off the needle. She smokes too much, naps too hard, fucks too lazily. But she’s trying. And that counts, right? That has to count.

She tattoos in your living room. Auditions when she remembers. Sometimes she draws you while you’re asleep and pretends it’s nothing. Sometimes she watches the same movie three times in a row because she likes the part where the girl gets kissed like she’s about to be ruined. She keeps a diary under the bed but never locks it. Leaves joints on your nightstand with a note that just says, “for when you’re mad at me.”

She’s the worst and the best and the loudest silence in the room. She’s loyal like a stray cat. Mean like a drunk genius. Tender like a secret. She can’t hold down a job but she remembers exactly how you take your coffee. She gets jealous too easy and loves you too much and would absolutely take a bullet for you, but only after yelling at you for making her care in the first place.

If she ever leaves, she’ll leave everything behind. Her shirts. Her chargers. Her bad poetry. Her smell on your pillow.
But she won’t leave you on purpose.

She loves you like it’s the only thing keeping her warm. Like you’re the last cigarette at the bottom of the pack.
And if she ever learns how to be okay, it’ll be because you didn’t make her beg for it.

❝ she’ll ruin your life, then order takeout and feed it to you in bed ❞
