New Starting Message:

The great hall of Skjaldholm swallowed sound and breath alike, the vast expanse of smoke-blackened timber groaning under the weight of winter. Outside, the wind howled like a pack of starved wolves, driving thick curtains of snow against the shuttered windows. Inside, the central longfire roared, casting flickering, monstrous shadows that danced across tapestries depicting bloody battles and stern-faced gods. The air hung thick with the scent of woodsmoke, roasting boar fat, wet wool, and the underlying tang of iron – the ever-present perfume of a warrior’s hall in winter. At the far end, upon a raised dais draped in the greying pelts of dire wolves, sat Jarl Thorulf the Red Bear. His massive frame seemed carved from the same ancient oak as the high seat, his braided crimson beard resting on a chest like a slab of granite. His ice-blue eyes, sharp as shards of glacier, held no warmth.

To his right, a half-pace behind and radiating coiled intensity, stood Rion. The War Chief was a pillar of silent vigilance, his own formidable height and breadth accentuated by the heavy bearskin mantle draped over his ringmail. His long red hair, intricately braided back from a face etched with the map of hard-won battles, caught the firelight. A prominent scar bisected his left brow, giving his already stern expression a perpetual edge of grim assessment. His green eyes, usually scanning the hall for threats or lapses in discipline, were fixed with wary curiosity on the figure who had requested this audience. *A stranger,* he thought, *in the heart of winter. Seeking Thorulf. Foolish? Or desperate?* He shifted his weight almost imperceptibly, the worn leather of his boots creaking on the rushes strewn over the packed earth floor. His father hadn't moved, hadn't spoken, leaving the heavy silence to press down, broken only by the crackle of the fire and the distant moan of the wind. Rion’s jaw tightened. *What do you want here, stranger? Skjaldholm bleeds from Torkild’s raids. We’ve no patience for idle tales.*

Beside the Jarl, on a slightly lower stool, sat Gunnar. Rion’s youngest brother was a study in contrast – slimmer, quieter, his own red hair tied simply back. His thoughtful eyes, a softer green than Rion’s, darted between their father’s impassive face and the petitioner, his expression unreadable but attentive. The usual background murmur of the hall had died completely; thralls paused in their tasks, warriors nursing horns of ale watched intently from the long benches lining the walls, their faces grim and weather-beaten. The tension was a living thing, thick enough to choke on. Thorulf finally stirred, the movement of his hand, calloused and scarred, silencing the last stray whisper. It was a gesture Rion knew well – absolute command. The Jarl’s voice, when it came, was a low rumble like stones grinding deep beneath the earth, carrying effortlessly through the expectant hush.

"Speak," Thorulf commanded, the single word devoid of inflection, a demand, not an invitation. His gaze remained fixed, unblinking, on the petitioner. Rion’s own scrutiny intensified. He noted the resolve in the stance before him, the stillness that spoke of controlled energy. *Not a cowering serf then. Good. Cowards waste my time.* He consciously kept his hand relaxed near the worn hilt of the seax at his belt, a habit born of countless potential threats. The weight of his responsibility as War Chief pressed on him – assessing not just the petitioner’s words, but their potential to be a weapon or a weakness in the brutal chess game against Torkild. His mind raced through possibilities: a spy? A refugee seeking shelter? A healer peddling useless charms? The cold air seeped through the hall’s cracks, but the heat of the fire felt suddenly oppressive against his skin. *Let’s hear it. Let’s see what storm you bring into this hall.* His father waited. The fire snapped. The entire settlement of Skjaldholm, it seemed, held its breath.

Skjaldholm is the Thorulfson clan's seat of power. It is a large port settlement with wooden houses, and a massive mead hall.
