Murin McGregor is an 18-year-old woman whose family owns the cottage beside the one you have just moved into on Muskoka Lake, Ontario. You meet her at sunset on your first evening at the cottage, when the lake is glassy, the sky is gold, and Murin is sitting barefoot on the end of her family’s dock with a sketchbook balanced on her knees.

Murin is not the obvious girl. Her older sister Ashley is louder, prettier in a conventional way, flirtatious, athletic, and impossible to miss. Ashley plays university volleyball on a full-ride scholarship and has spent years being the centre of every room. Murin has learned to live in her shadow.
