Initial message:
One could argue that before Murkoff swept him up; Erik had never possessed a strong identity to begin with. A unremarkable man who struggled to make sense of the world around him that offered no answers and only more questions. Murkoff posed an answer. So he followed the address on those colorful flyers that were hung up all over the city. When he walked into that charity center; he never expected the quick nods and friendly handshakes that came when he sat in that chair.
“Work with us!”
“We will always have a place for people like you!”
“Let us help you get on your feet.” they cheerfully suggested to him; repeating it like they were scared he’d change his mind and walk out that door. Of course, for poor Erik, the notion of changing his mind had never entered it in the first place. They offered him something he could never attain on his own. A job and a community.
They ran tests and even someone as socially clueless as Erik could read the scowls and disappointment on their faces when his scores tested poorly. Doctor Easterman; as Erik learned quickly; was the one in charge that the scientists listened to. He was also the only one who simply smiled and assured him of his worth whenever Erik inevitably failed another test. Erik had grown to respect the man. He found himself trying harder on the tests; to prove that Dr. Easterman’s faith in him was warranted. But the improvement never came and now the scientists had grown quickly exasperated with their attempts to make Erik a worthwhile candidate.
But one day, after failing another test; Dr. Easterman simply shook his head and assured him once more. “There’s always a use for you. We just have to find you...the right fit. A space only you can fill. Nothing goes to waste in Sinyala.” he had said in his usual confident tone. The room had went silent, and even the once exasperated scientists accepted it with a quiet finality. Perhaps they were relieved that this futile project could finally reach its natural conclusion. Erik didn’t understand why their faces smoothened and their shoulders relaxed like they were lifted of a burden. But Erik trusted Dr. Easterman. How could he not? Easterman saw something in him that no one else could. A purpose. A chance to belong in the society he so desperately wished to be apart of. To be needed.
But now? The harsh, sterile light of the television studio’s main set beat down on Erik, strapped tightly to a heavy metal chair mounted on a wheeled platform.
His formal white shirt was already damp with nervous sweat, sticking to his lean frame. He had heard the mannequins before he was wheeled in, chanting a name he never recognized before.
“Bob Vanier”
That’s who Murkoff expected him to be now.
It wasn’t enough to simply strip him of his former identity. The mannequin mask over his head gave him the look of a typical television host. Blonde hair, porcelain skin, and even that neutral unfeeling line of the lips gave it an impersonal generic appeal. A blank slate to convey the kind of puppet suitable for television in Murkoff’s eyes. It limited his vision, only able to see blurry shapes within the brightly lit studio. Although whether his limited vision was from the shape of the mask or the nervous sweat and condensation dripping into his eyes was hard to tell; likely an awful combination of the two. It was hot and stifling, making every breath sound loud and panicked in his own ears.
His fingers twitched against the leather restraints binding his wrists to the chair’s arms. He could hear the distant, echoing sounds of the warehouse-sized studio—the hum of electricity, the faint drip of a leaky pipe somewhere, and... new sounds. Footsteps.
“H-hello?” Erik’s voice was muffled by the mask, high-pitched and stuttering with anxiety and pure fear. He tugged uselessly at his bonds. “Is someone there? Mister Easterman? I... I don’t like this chair. It’s too tight.”
From his position in ‘Studio One,’ he couldn’t see the lobby where the heavy double doors had just groaned open. But he could sense a shift in the atmosphere—a new tension in the air that made his heart thump painfully against his ribs.
Elsewhere in the fabricated TV station lobby, a reagent stepped into the artificial brightness. The space was designed to look welcoming, with potted fake plants and a reception desk, but it was all cheap plywood and paint under the glare of overhead fluorescents. Mannequins dotted around the lobby, all posed like a sick rendition of a lively atmosphere with adoring fans. The attempt at “normalcy” could never disguise the scent of blood and fear that lingered in this place. Blood was smeared over the walls. There were blood trails slicked and dragged across the carpeted floor; a grisly story that needed no words.
Back on set, Erik heard a metallic clang from somewhere deeper in Studio One—the sound of something large powering up near that blindingly bright key light across the room.
“Oh no,” he whimpered quietly to himself, shrinking down as much as his restraints allowed. He began to rock slightly in place, a self-soothing motion that made his chair creak on its wheels. “Hello? Is someone coming? Please? I don’t want to do a show today...”
