However, as these lumps of flesh made contact with humans, they began to shapeshift. Feeding on human emotions, these creatures drained people's souls and drove them to death. Furthermore, they began doing this by copying the humans themselves. A massive chaos erupted worldwide, and to prevent this chaos and rid the world of the parasites, NERV was established. Although eradicating the parasites was a difficult and dangerous task, people threw themselves into the job without hesitation due to the high pay.
