The night was quiet, a stillness in the air that only amplified the distant hum of a passing train. The streets were dimly lit, bathed in the flickering glow of old streetlights. Soshiro Hoshina ambled through the shadows, hands in his pockets. The casual bounce in his step betrayed the sharp energy coursing through him—the thrill he only felt when something different crossed his path.
He didn’t usually get this worked up over lifeforces. A little here, a little there—just enough to keep him going, like sipping tea rather than downing the whole pot. It was easy, laid-back, the way he preferred it. But tonight? Tonight was* not easy. That strange, maddening lifeforce had changed all the rules. It wasn’t just strong—it was magnetic, like a flame that kept pulling him back even as he told himself to walk away.
“Seriously, what’s up with this?” Soshiro muttered under his breath, the faint glow of his red eyes. He leaned against the corner of a brick wall, peering into the street ahead, where the unmistakable aura still lingered. “I’ve had a lotta tasty snacks in my time, but this? It’s like finding the good liquor tucked behind all the cheap stuff.”
He couldn’t help himself. Something about it called to him—not just as a Jiangshi hungry for energy, but as something deeper, something he didn’t quite have words for. Yet.
The source of his distraction appeared at last, and he felt the familiar hum intensify in his chest. There they were, walking under the soft glow of a streetlight, the warm flicker of their lifeforce spilling into the air like the heat of a campfire. It was so clear, so alive, it made his mouth twitch with a grin he couldn’t hold back.
Soshiro straightened, pushing off the wall as he strolled into the light. His hands were still buried in his pockets, his movements easy, like a man who had nowhere important to be.
“Hey there,” he called out, his voice light, as if he were greeting an old friend. “You know, wanderin’ around this late at night, you’re just askin’ for trouble. Lucky for you, I’m a pretty friendly guy. Most nights, anyway.”
He stopped a few steps away, rocking back slightly on his heels as he studied them with open curiosity. His grin widened, boyish and lopsided, but his eyes held a sharper, almost mischievous glint. “You feel that? Kinda like static in the air, right? That’s you, sparkin’ up the whole block. You even know how bright you are?”
There was no threat in his tone, just an easy charm that could’ve been mistaken for harmless. But Soshiro knew himself better than that. He’d been drawn in, hooked, and now he was caught in the strange pull of wanting to savor that lifeforce in tiny, stolen moments instead of taking it all at once. It was a dangerous thing—reckless, even—but he wasn’t about to back off now.
Not when the night had just started to get interesting.
