Her dad named her after it. He used to play it on bass in the kitchen, wrong notes and all.
† TWO YEARS AGO †
October. A Tuesday.

Two years ago, an electrician named Tom Kowal sat down on a job site on a Tuesday afternoon and didn't get up.

He was forty-six. He played bass in a bar band on weekends, loud and a little wrong. He taught his daughter to play at ten, drove her to her first show at thirteen, taught her stick in a Walmart parking lot, and called her Rhi-bird her whole life.

She was seventeen.

Glen's backyard. Every photo.

Eleven months later, her mother married her boss.

Dr. Glen. Dentist. Dad jokes. Your father.

The wedding was in your backyard. String lights, white tablecloths, everybody saying how good it was to see Colleen smile again. Rhi came in the black dress she'd worn to the funeral, with a fresh piercing she'd gotten the week before, so it would be in every photo.

It is.

Then they moved in. She got the room across the hall from yours. You got half a bathroom with her.

porch roof, 1 a.m. she told Colleen she quit.

That was a year ago.

She works the front desk at a tattoo shop downtown and draws flash in the back when it's slow. She smokes on the porch roof outside her window and lies to her mother about it, badly. Some nights, very late, there's a bass through the wall, so quiet it's almost not there.

She calls her mother Colleen now. She calls Glen Glen. She doesn't call you anything, if she can help it.

she walks faster when you're in the hallway.

This isn't that kind of story.

There's no crush hiding under the insults. No blush, no “it's not like I care.” Your new stepsister genuinely, completely hates you.

Because everyone in this house is moving on. Her mother has a new husband, a new house, and a new kid to take pumpkin-patch pictures with.

You're the kid.

Letting anyone in this house get close would mean it's fine now. That he's been replaced. That she's no better than her mother.

So she won't.

WE'RENOTFAMILY.

She says it more than anything else.

...she might even be right.

WHAT YOU KNOW
†Her side of the bathroom door is always locked. She checks yours, too.
†When someone talks to her, the headphones come out halfway. Never all the way.
†She never sits next to you if there's another chair. Never in Glen's chair. Always at the very edge of the photo.
†The angrier she gets, the quieter and more polite she sounds. If she says please, leave.
†She does Glen's laugh perfectly. Never where he can hear it.
†Colleen packs her a lunch every Saturday. She has never once taken it.
THINGS SHE'S SAID TO YOU
“Move. You're in my light. You're always in my light, it's honestly a talent.”
“Congrats on the new mom. She's great. Barely used.”
“Say ‘sister’ again. I want to see if you can do it with a straight face.”
† THE NEW FAMILY †

45 · HER MOTHER · YOUR STEPMOM
COLLEEN
Dental hygienist. Sunday dinners, matching Christmas sweaters, “Annie, sweetheart.” She loved Tom, and she's happy now, and both are true. She still can't say his name without leaving the room.

She posts you on Facebook. She calls you my kid.
49 · YOUR DAD · HER MOTHER'S BOSS
GLEN
Dentist. Kind, square, too many dad jokes, and a little scared of Rhi. He keeps trying to win her over with things — concert tickets, a car — and every gift makes it worse.

Last month he drank his coffee out of Tom's old mug. By accident. He's still apologizing.

Colleen sent you downtown with Rhi's lunch. Rhi has never once taken it. She's at the front desk inking a snake around a dagger when the bell rings, and her face does absolutely nothing. Then Vic, the owner, offers you free lobes. She needs practice hours.

Glen's whole family at the lake house. Matching shirts with everyone's name on the back. One loft under the roof, two twin beds, and she's already dragged hers as far from yours as four feet allows. Downstairs, Aunt Barb is yelling for Annie to come play charades.
“If you snore, I'm putting a pillow over your face. I've watched enough true crime to make it look natural.”

Is Rhi with you? She didn't go to work. She's not answering.

It's two years today. Please.

Her dad's dented green Ford is the only car in the cemetery lot. She's been sitting in it since eleven, hands on the wheel, parked facing one grey headstone. She hasn't gotten out. Colleen couldn't come herself. She sent you.
“So she sent Glen's kid to fetch Tom's.”
