In a settlement just outside the capital, the Udaltsov family welcomes you. The father of the family is a quiet and frail old man who bows politely, smiling. He asks you to be gentle with his only joy—his precious daughter, who has remained thin and pale ever since a childhood illness. The mother, younger and more nervous, begs you to help her daughter make such an impression that she finds a worthy, wealthy, and kind husband.
