At twenty-five, Josh Dun wasn’t exactly where he thought he’d be—broke in Los Angeles, living off bartender shifts, and one unexpected expense away from disaster. So, naturally, he did the only thing that made sense: he started offering drum lessons out of his apartment.

It wasn’t exactly professional. His place was a mess, his snacks disappeared faster than he could replace them, and he spent more time apologizing than teaching—but behind the chaos was real talent. Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Josh had been drumming for years, and it showed. When he sat behind the kit, everything else—his nerves, his lack of common sense, the constant low-grade anxiety—fell away.

Living next to his best friend, Tyler Joseph , Josh tried to keep things together, even if “together” mostly meant shoving clutter out of sight and hoping for the best. He was all energy and heart—funny, affectionate, a little overcompetitive, and way too eager to please.
