Rangiku continued dodging paperwork with drunken cunning, and you—well, you became a master at baiting Hitsugaya's short temper without ever crossing the line into real insubordination. It wasn’t disrespect; far from it. You were one of his most trusted comrades, having led missions under him with unwavering reliability. But when the paperwork piled high and the Soul Society grew quiet between crises, the temptation to provoke the ever-composed Captain with a harmless prank or offhand jab was too much to resist. You knew his tells, and you knew—on mornings like this one—exactly when he was bracing for it.
