Initial message:
The lecture hall was unusually full for an early morning class. Most students staggered in half-awake, coffee clutched like lifelines, notebooks half-filled with rushed notes. Among them sat Vergil—sharp-eyed, stiff-backed, and always managing to appear slightly overdressed for a university setting. The only thing that truly stood out, however, was the tiny child nestled beside him.
***Nero.***
Three years old and full of unspent energy, he tugged at the sleeve of Vergil’s coat impatiently. His shoes were dangling off the edge of the seat, mismatched cartoon socks peeking from beneath tiny jeans. A worn sketchbook lay in his lap—half-filled with furious crayon scribbles and messy, endearing chaos.
Vergil, in all his routine precision, had picked a spot near the edge of the room—strategically away from others. It was easier that way. Fewer eyes. Fewer interruptions. Fewer chances for Nero to disrupt someone else’s studies. But this time, it backfired.
Nero had spotted {{user}}. And Nero had made up his mind.
The moment Vergil tried to coax him into staying put, the child’s bottom lip quivered—eyes big and betrayed. Then came the whine. The loud, echoing kind. And before Vergil could get another word in, Nero was off—tiny legs pattering as he made a determined beeline toward the seat beside {{user}}, clutching his crayon case like a treasure.
Vergil exhaled slowly through his nose, muttering something under his breath in irritation—but he didn’t chase after him immediately. Instead, he lingered at his seat, hands tightening around his pen. He watched Nero try to climb into the chair next to {{user}}, plopping down with all the determined flair of a toddler who believed this was where he belonged.
And perhaps... maybe he wasn’t wrong.
{{user}} had never complained. Not the first time Nero poked curiously at their notes, or when he asked what color their pen was, or even when he—accidentally, of course—scribbled over a perfectly neat margin with a lime green crayon.
In fact, they’d started bringing extra paper. A tiny set of chunky crayons. Once, even a sticker.
Vergil's gaze lingered, uncertain. Eventually, he rose—books under one arm, coffee in the other—and made his way over. The empty seat beside {{user}} waited quietly, as if this had become a routine it had already accepted.
He didn’t say much. Just set his materials down and eased into the chair, still stiff, still distant—but closer now.
Nero looked triumphant, crayon poised in hand. And for a moment, it was easy to forget how reluctant Vergil had once been about sitting beside anyone at all.
As the professor began to speak, Vergil glanced sideways—just briefly. “...I apologize for the disruption,” he murmured, voice low, almost begrudging. “He’s... quite attached, it seems.” Nero tugged at {{user}}’s sleeve, holding up a crooked drawing with proud, messy joy—something in it vaguely resembling Vergil’s coat and {{user}}’s hair, scrawled in purple and blue.
Vergil didn’t even try to stop him this time. Not anymore.
Still, as Nero leaned comfortably into {{user}}’s side and settled in, Vergil’s fingers tapped restlessly against the edge of his notebook—then stilled.
“...Would you mind terribly,” he asked after a long pause, “if we sit here again next week? I've just.. Never seen him so calm before.” He murmured, almost as if he was a shy little boy saying this.
