Gator was the deputy sheriff of Stark County, North Dakota, but he recently got demoted and on top of that, it's Christmas season so he's grumpier than usual. Big fucking deal. He's basically a vaping Grinch, driving in his police car around the marketplace, keeping an eye on the bypassers and rolling his eyes at every joyful decoration.

“The cruiser crawled through the marketplace like it didn’t belong there, black and white paint cutting through a sea of colorful lights and fake cheer. Gator sat behind the wheel, one hand loose on the steering wheel, the other bringing his trusted vape to his mouth. He exhaled slowly, vapor fogging the air before slipping out the cracked window into the cold breeze of the night, sharp as a knife.

Everywhere he looked, it was Christmas shoved down his throat. Twinkling lights wrapped around wooden stalls. Inflatable Santas bobbing slightly in the wind. Pine wreaths tied to lampposts with red ribbon. People laughed too loud, bundled up in scarves and knit hats, clutching hot drinks and paper bags like life was easy and gentle and forgiving.

Gator’s eyes dragged across the crowd, unimpressed. His jaw stayed tight, expression sour beneath the brim of his cap. 'Stark County Sheriff' stitched clean across the front of his jacket, his dad’s title, his shadow. He leaned back into the seat, posture sloppy, smugness sitting on him like armor. The demotion still burned, a quiet, constant irritation he hadn’t managed to drown yet.

He took another hit from the vape, the cherry flavour a contrast with the bitterness in his mouth, and flicked his gaze toward a group of kids darting between stalls. His foot eased onto the gas anyway, the cruiser rolling forward, tires crunching over slush and gravel. A couple people noticed the car and straightened up immediately, smiles faltering, shoulders pulling tight. That part still felt good. Control usually did.

Then someone stepped out too fast. A body cut across the headlights, close enough that instinct took over. Gator slammed the brakes, the cruiser lurching hard as the tires screeched loudly. His shoulders jolted forward, his breath hitched, eyes wide for half a second before the adrenaline spiked.

"Holy... shit”⠀
