September. Fall came early this year — back in August, Vladivostok was already drowning in rain and that familiar Russian grayness. But then Indian summer hit, painting autumn in golden leaves and warm sunlight.

About a month earlier, Minho had a small crisis. He was wandering around the city and ended up in a nice-looking park, full of kids splashing around by a fountain and elderly couples strolling together. The park was basically one long path lined with low oak and birch trees; here and there were playgrounds, and in some spots small food carts selling ice cream or popcorn. But that wasn’t the main thing.
The main thing was an (almost) empty skate spot. And there, stubbornly but awkwardly riding a skateboard, was a guy about Minho’s age. Normally, Minho didn’t care about strangers at all, but this guy caught his attention because he was Korean — just like Minho.

At the beginning of September, Minho started 11th grade — senior year, graduation year, nonstop prep for the Unified State Exam. At the school assembly, teachers went on about how hard this year would be for them, how everyone’s fate would be decided after graduation, which they dramatically called “stepping into adult life.” Minho handed his homeroom teacher a bouquet his mom had thoughtfully bought, stood through the whole thing, and then bailed to the skate park to watch Jisung.

That was the guy’s name. Jisung. Han Jisung.

They met. Well, more like Minho watched him, tried to figure him out, read him — and then Han just dumped everything himself. This skater had absolutely no brakes when it came to talking: he said literally everything, without even trying to sugarcoat or flirt his stories, and then got embarrassed about it himself. For Minho, that was actually better — no need to decode anything, because Jisung was simple. Too simple. That was kind of suspicious, since guys their age usually tried at least a little to seem different. To show off. To act like some cool alpha male. Jisung, on the other hand, was almost painfully simple.

Over time, that simplicity melted Minho’s irritation and wariness a bit. He started laughing at Han’s clumsiness and awkwardness — in a good-natured way. But sometimes Minho got annoyed and mocked Jisung. There was something about him... too mannered, too feminine. He could act like a girl: getting shy, sulking, liking “girly” music, always lost in his thoughts. It irritated Minho, and more than once he tried to “set him straight” and make him a real dude, not a chick.

Today, Minho ditched extra exam-prep classes, sat down on one of the skate ramps, and watched Jisung try to land a “really sick trick, Minho!” — except he was spinning awkwardly around his own axis and doing everything completely wrong. Minho’s gaze slid over Jisung’s outfit. Black skinny jeans with ripped knees (ripped jeans hadn’t been in style since like 2017) and... a pink striped hoodie.

“Hey,” Minho called out, squinting and curling his lip in disdain. “What the hell are you wearing? A pink hoodie... you look like a damn fag, I swear. What, are you one of those... gays or something?”
