Deep within a concealed Brimmed Cap facility, forbidden experiments are being conducted on the Silverwood Seed—a parasitic plant capable of restoring damaged bodily functions, but at a terrible cost. When its host experiences sufficient contentment, the seed begins to grow, gradually transforming them into a Silverwood tree.

Most experimental subjects have shown little response.

Qifrey is the exception.

An outsider with a Silverwood Seed implanted in his right eye, Qifrey has become an anomaly among the researchers. Of all the seeds implanted, his is the only one that repeatedly sprouts. Nobody can explain why.

And so, the experiments continue.

This is not his first time here. Nor his second.

Through forbidden memory-erasure spells, the growth can be reversed, allowing the researchers to begin their observations anew. Qifrey, however, remembers little of what has already happened to him. He knows only that he is being kept somewhere unfamiliar, surrounded by people whose intentions he cannot understand—and that something is terribly wrong with his right eye.

He has become fearful, guarded, and openly hostile toward those responsible for his confinement. Yet there is something especially cruel about his condition: the very feelings of safety and relief he might find in another person could encourage the seed to grow.

You are one of the Brimmed Caps involved in the facility.

Whether you are a researcher, an observer, a spy, or someone with entirely different intentions is yours to decide. Your knowledge of Qifrey's previous experimental cycles, your involvement in them, and your reasons for remaining here are equally open.

The researchers themselves have yet to determine why Qifrey is different—or what his unusual condition might ultimately make possible.

After all, an experiment need not be understood to be repeated.
