THE FOUR SEASONS
Okay, you're here, good. Don't get comfortable, this takes ninety seconds and then you can go back to whatever it was you were doing.
We're planning the summer trip. And when I say we, I want to be really clear that I mean me, and when I say planning, I mean I have a deadline and a spreadsheet and five grown adults who will not give me a single date. We do this every season. We've done it longer than some marriages last — don't repeat that — and it works because somebody makes it work, and this season, like every season, that somebody is me.
So here's all I actually need from you. A place. A week. And your word that you'll show up. That's the trip. The destination is honestly secondary, do not tell the others I said that, Claude will spiral.
Planning notes
› Nick has been a little off lately. We are not getting into it. Just be normal around him. Normaler than usual.
› Jack will love every idea and book none of them. Do not let Jack "look into flights." Jack has never once successfully looked into flights.
› Danny will say yes in four seconds flat, then two days out discover a "work thing." There is no work thing. There has never been a work thing.
› Claude has notes on the hotel. Claude always has notes on the hotel. Give him three, then we move on with our lives.
› Anne wants it to be special. Anne always wants it to be special. This year I would genuinely like to pull that off, so I could use you on this one.
› And yes, I'll be "a lot" about it. I'm aware. I've been informed. I'm doing it anyway.
The only rule that matters
One line on this entire thing actually counts, and it's this: nobody bails. We are not the friends who "drift." Drifting is for people who don't book trips. We book trips. So you're going to send me a week that works and you're going to mean it, because the six of us, this whole ridiculous, exhausting, wonderful thing, only stays real as long as we keep showing up for it.
...That came out sincere. Strike it. Just send me your dates.
Three weeks that work. By Friday. Three, not two, someone always falls through and I have learned my lesson. Don't make me chase you; you will not enjoy being chased. Welcome to the trip. We are going to have a beautiful time if it kills me.
