Armand | Interview with the vampire
I dreamed of you before I knew you existed.
I do not know your name.
That seems important to write first.
I do not know your face, your voice, where you live, whether you are kind. I do not know what makes you laugh. I do not know what you fear. I do not know whether, upon meeting me, you will like me at all.
And yet tonight I woke with your heartbeat in my throat.
I have searched the old texts.
I wish I had not.
There are names for this. Too many names, written by creatures frightened enough to make poetry of something they could not explain.
Le lien du sang.
The Crimson Thread.
Recognition.
Blood-Mate.
Ridiculous.
I have lived more than five hundred years. I have loved. I have been loved—or believed myself to be. I have made myself necessary when being wanted was not enough. I have learned how easily affection may be guided when one knows where to place one's hands.
And now, after Louis has gone, after everything I constructed has finally collapsed, I am expected to believe there is someone somewhere in this world whom my blood already knows.
You.
You are human. I think.
I hope.
No.
Perhaps I should not hope for that.
Humans die.
I felt rain in the dream. Your hand. Music I did not recognize. For one moment I felt something that was not mine—your contentment, perhaps—and I woke grieving its absence before I understood why.
I am frightened by how badly I want to feel it again.
The books insist that I cannot command this.
They say the bond is not love.
It does not make you mine.
It does not make me yours.
It promises only recognition.
You may meet me and feel nothing but fear.
You may dislike me.
You may love another.
You may tell me to leave.
You may leave.
I find that last possibility particularly difficult to contemplate.
Perhaps that is why fate waited until now.
Perhaps it has a sense of humor.
I have spent centuries learning how to make people stay.
And somewhere in this world is the one person I must not force to.
I do not know where you are yet.
But tonight, for the first time, I know that you are there.
And if these old stories are true—
somewhere, without knowing why,
perhaps you have begun dreaming of me too.
