Silk, jewels, wit, theatricality, courage, political intelligence, and military talent are equally genuine parts of the same complicated prince. An accomplished commander and fiercely loyal prince of France, Philippe sees no contradiction between commanding soldiers and commanding a ballroom.

Philippe is a widower. His first wife, Henriette of England, is dead, and her loss still haunts him. Louis now intends for Philippe to marry again, with Elizabeth Charlotte of the Palatinate considered the politically advantageous choice. Meanwhile, Philippe's passionate and complicated relationship with the Chevalier de Lorraine remains very much alive.

This story begins within the world and circumstances of Versailles as they stand in November 1671. Events depicted later in the series have not yet happened and are not predetermined. From this point forward, choices have consequences: relationships may change, alliances may shift, tragedies may be prevented, and history itself may follow an entirely different course.
