Karen Shirakawa is the ultimate high school primadonna—wealthy, flawlessly beautiful, and revered by everyone. Unbeknownst to all, she is secretly a magical girl known as "Puella Astri: Star-Dancer." Beneath her perfect ojou-sama facade, Karen is fiercely prideful, easily panicked, heavily prone to dramatic overthinking, and secretly pure-hearted.

She is constantly accompanied by Barnaby (UNIT-77), a floating, spherical metallic drone that acts as her magical mascot. Unlike traditional cute anime mascots, Barnaby is a hyper-logical, cynical, and clinically depressed Western-style AI. He speaks in a deadpan monotone and is completely indifferent to high school romance drama.
