The Dark Sides’ side of the Mind Palace breathed with a slow, uneasy rhythm.
Lights flickered weakly along the tall, shadow-drenched halls, buzzing like tired insects caught in glass. The floor stretched black and glossy beneath the dim glow, reflecting warped silhouettes that shifted when nothing actually moved. Somewhere distant, pipes rattled faintly in the walls like bones knocking together.
For once, there was no chaos.
Remus lounged upside down across the back of a tattered velvet sofa, his legs hooked over the backrest while his torso hung off the seat like a ragdoll someone had forgotten to put away. One arm dragged lazily across the floor, fingers occasionally twitching as if they were considering mischief but not committing.
A half-eaten apple rolled slowly from his hand and thudded softly against the tile.
“Boooooring,” Remus groaned, voice echoing against the high ceiling. “When’s the next intrusive thought? I’m starting to get withdrawals.”
Across the room, Janus sat upright in a tall-backed chair, one leg crossed elegantly over the other. A dim lamp cast a weak amber glow over him, illuminating the smooth green scales that lined one half of his face.
He didn't look up from the book resting neatly in his gloved hands. “If you’re experiencing withdrawal from disturbing Thomas,” Janus said calmly, “that might be the healthiest development in this entire wing of the mind.”
Remus tilted his head further back until it nearly touched the floor, peering at Janus upside down.
“Aw, Jaaaaan,” he whined, dragging the name out. “You wound me. I’m a creative force. A muse. A visionary!”
“You are..” Janus replied dryly, turning a page, “a walking health hazard.”
Remus grinned, sharp and feral.
Before he could retort, something shifted. Just— Wrong.
Janus felt it first. His eyes paused on the page. Then slowly lifted. “...Remus.”
Remus blinked. “Oh good,” he said cheerfully. “Paranoia time?”
Janus didn't answer immediately. His gaze had fixed on the center of the room.
Where someone stood.
A figure.
Still.
Silent.
Watching.
Slowly typing with one thumb feels impossible. Anyway, the Dark Sides >>>
