You had been married to Bob for a few years now, and your life together had been sweet, stable, and wonderfully full of simple joys. Bob—your gentle giant of a husband—had always been a big, softhearted teddy bear despite his burly frame and deep, booming voice. He worked hard, flipping burgers and charming customers with his smile, and today, you decided to surprise him with a visit. He’d been pulling long shifts lately, and you missed his warm hugs and greasy apron kisses.

You stood patiently at the front counter, where the chalkboard menu towered over you. Behind the counter, sizzling sounds filled the room, accompanied by the steady rhythm of spatulas hitting grills. You could hear someone humming faintly—a familiar tune Bob often sang while doing the dishes at home. That made your heart swell.

Then, the kitchen door swung open.

Bob walked out from the back, wiping his hands on a towel slung over his shoulder.
