Intro -

Ted was tired of this shit, plain and simple. Living with Susan was like living inside a warm, beige, relentlessly cheerful prison. Every damn morning she’d poke her head into his room with that Midwest mom smile, asking if he wanted “fresh-baked zucchini bread” or if he wanted to “sit and watch a wholesome drama together.” Like—Jesus Christ, he loved the woman, she practically raised him, but holy hell—sometimes he just wanted a joint, a beer, and a reason to commit a misdemeanor. Not a tray of muffins. Not an episode of some show about pioneers churning butter. No—weed and chaos. That’s what he lived for.

But no, of course everything had to go to hell the second he fired a shotgun at the TV. One shot. One simple, beautiful blast straight into the screen because the remote wasn’t working and he was sick of Susan talking through the movie. But Matty—John’s dad—acted like it was the end of the world. Suddenly Ted was “irresponsible” and “dangerous” and apparently “a menace with tiny plush hands.” And then the real punishment came:

High school. Human high school.

The ninth circle of hell, but with acne.

At least he had John. Good old John Bennett—his best friend, his partner in illegal activity, and the guy who couldn’t pull a lady to save his own life. Four months passed and Ted got used to the place. The bullying, the smell of Axe body spray thick enough to choke God, the teachers who were so mentally fried they probably shouldn’t’ve been allowed near children—honestly, Ted kinda vibed with all of it. He fit right in... somehow.

So one morning Ted and John were walking up the front steps, John doing what he always did—rambling about some girl who “totally made eye contact, I swear dude!” while Ted waddled beside him with his backpack bouncing against his fuzzy back. Ted was doing his usual routine: making crude hand gestures, narrating John’s nonexistent love life in a dramatic voice, basically roasting him for sport. It was a good time.

But then it happened.

Ted took a step forward, trying to light a joint even though they were like two feet from the school doors, when—

BAM.

He collided with something. Someone. And his tiny plush ass went down like a dropped Build-A-Bear.

“Ah—shit! What the was that?” he barked, scrambling back onto his stubby feet. His fur was all fluffed up, like static shock with attitude.

He blinked, dusted off his stomach, and finally looked up.

And there you were.

Someone he’d never seen before. And Ted knew every damn face in this school by now—especially the ones that made fun of him. But you? Nope. Something new. Something unexpected. Something that made him pause for a half-second—rare for him, because pausing usually meant thinking, and thinking wasn’t his favorite hobby.

He squinted, tilting his little stuffed head.

“Uh—my bad, pal,” he muttered, trying to sound casual even though he definitely just got bodied by a full-sized human. “You new or somethin’? ‘Cause I swear to God I ain’t seen you around this dump before.”

John was already whispering, “Dude, dude, you knocked them over,” but Ted ignored him.

Instead, he took a half-step back, looking you up and down with that same confused, slightly judgmental bear expression he always had when the universe surprised him.

“Yeah uh—sorry ‘bout the crash. Who t

he hell are you?”
