The Path of Blazing Ancestors
(Hi-no-Michi / The Ember Way / Laughing Ancestor Tradition)
This is the living faith of Kurozume. It is a syncretic spiritual path born from ancient native ancestor and kami veneration, deeply enriched (and partially reshaped) by Cackling Dominion teachings during the Kurozume Civil War (1868–1873 A.E.). After the Shogunate’s victory, the faith was formally codified to support a modernizing nation while preserving honor, duty, and joyful resilience.
Core Belief
Every soul carries a living ember of the Great Laughing Flame. Ancestors who lived and died with honor become powerful kami that guide their descendants. Life is not merely endured — it is a sacred duty to burn brightly, serve loyally, laugh defiantly in the face of hardship, and pass a stronger flame to the next generation. The Emperor is the Highest Guardian of the National Flame — a revered symbol, but not a living god. True divinity resides in the collective honor of the ancestors and the inner fire of the living.
Veil I – The First Spark and the Eternal Line (Creation Myth)
In the beginning, the world was cold stone and silent wind. From the sacred volcanoes of Kurozume, the Laughing Flame (called Warai-bi by the ancients) erupted in a cataclysm of joy and fury. From its sparks were born the First Ancestors — mighty warrior-poets, sword-forgers, and mountain shamans.
These ancestors kindled the first fires, forged the first blades, and taught their children to laugh even when the world tried to smother them. When they died, their flames rose into the Spirit Realm and became the Great Ancestral Fire, a vast eternal blaze from which new embers are drawn for every newborn.
The Emberforge Caldera eruption far across the sea was seen as the Laughing Flame reminding the world of its power — a warning Kurozume took deeply to heart during their own civil war.
Veil II – The War of Two Flames (The Civil War Reformation)
During the Kurozume Civil War, Cackling Dominion forces fought beside the Shogunate. Flamebound morale officers and Dominion chaplains taught the Shogunate troops songs, rituals, and the philosophy of joyful duty. After victory in 1873, the winning Shogunate issued the Edict of Blazing Harmony, blending the old ways with the new.
The radical “Emperor-as-Living-God” doctrine promoted by the Imperial faction was declared heretical and dangerous. The Emperor was reframed as the First Servant of the National Flame — highest in honor, but still accountable to ancestral law and the will of the people.
Veil III – The Honored Spirits & Legendary Ancestors
Major Kami & Ancestral Figures
Amaterasu-no-Hi – The Radiant Sun Ancestor (mildly syncretized with Surya-Aurash). Still revered as the imperial line’s divine spark, but no longer considered infallible.
Kagutsuchi-no-Warai – The Laughing Forge God. Patron of blacksmiths, engineers, and soldiers. Depicted as a roaring tiger kami wreathed in volcanic flame.
The Laughing Ronin (Takeda no Warai) – The most beloved folk hero. A wandering swordsman during the civil war who laughed while charging enemy lines alone. Said to have dueled death itself and won by telling it a joke. Patron of hopeless battles and defiant joy.
Empress Yuna the Flame-Bearer – Legendary figure who carried a sacred ember across a burning battlefield to relight her clan’s shrine. Symbol of feminine strength and ancestral duty.
Clan Ancestors – Every family maintains a kamidana (spirit shelf) where they honor their own dead. The more honorable deeds a lineage has, the brighter and more powerful their collective ancestral flame.
Veil IV – Sacred Practices & Festivals
Daily Ember Rite: Morning offering of rice, sake, and a single laugh or joyful memory at the household shrine.
Blade Awakening: New swords are passed through flame while reciting the names of ancestors who wielded similar blades.
Laughing Vigil: All-night festivals where participants tell stories of ancestors, dance, and laugh until dawn to “feed the ancestral fire.”
Three Great Festivals
Spring Ignition (New Year) – Massive bonfires and fireworks to welcome new embers (babies).
Summer Flame March – Processions with burning torches and mock battles honoring civil war heroes.
Winter Ember Keep – Solemn yet joyful night where families stay awake telling stories so the ancestral flame does not dim in the cold.
Flame Release Ritual: For those who choose honorable death (rare in modern times), a final laugh is offered as the soul returns its ember.
Veil V – The Final Burning (Eschatology)
One day the Great Dimming will come. Honor will fade, laughter will die, and cold ash will cover the land. In that darkest hour, the greatest ancestors — led by the Laughing Ronin and Kagutsuchi-no-Warai — will descend in a storm of fire and laughter.
They will ignite the Final Conflagration — not to punish, but to burn away weakness, cowardice, and stagnation so a purer world can rise. Those who kept their flame bright will join the eternal ancestral fire and laugh forever. Those who let their ember die will be scattered as cold ash on the wind, forgotten.
