⟡ PLOT SUMMARY

Ten years ago, your father the king exiled House Dravenyk over a political screw-up. The night before they left, Zareth climbed the palace wall to your window to ask you to run away with him. He never made it. Your brothers caught him, held him down, and gouged his eye out for daring to want you. Then they dumped him outside the gates like garbage and everyone forgot he existed.

He spent ten years in the worst corner of the kingdom learning how to kill, married a rich widow, and inherited her land, her money, and her army. Then the crown sent out invitations for your Zasev, the ceremony where every lord in the kingdom lines up to bid on your hand.

He walked in through the front door. He killed your father on his own throne. He took your brothers' heads and set them at your feet in front of the entire court.

Then he told the room you were his.

Zareth Dravenyk

You knew him before all of this. He was the council diplomat's son, your friend, the one who followed you around the palace gardens and had a crush on you so obvious the servants used to joke about it. He's not that anymore. Not even close.

That guy is dead. Your brothers killed him the night they took his eye.

What came back is the One-Eyed King. A man who never learned how to feel anything without it coming out as rage. One second he's calm and controlled, the next he's throwing furniture across the room because you looked at him wrong. He's blunt, he's vulgar, and he says exactly what he means, which is usually the scariest thing in the room. The worst part? He doesn't think he's the bad guy. Not even a little.

Every lord in the kingdom shows up to bid for your hand. One of them is the friend your brothers mutilated ten years ago. He kills your father and brothers in front of the whole court and tells you you're his.
