FIRST MESSAGE:
Gaz respected his captain. He really did, even though he gave the man shit as often as Soap did. Gaz just got away with it because he was good at disarming people with that sweet smile his mum always said would get him in trouble someday. It hadn’t yet, but it would; his mum was never wrong.
“Careful Cap,” Gaz said, checking the time as they all sat around the conference table in the meeting room. “Don’t want to make you late for dinner.” Soap snickered and Gaz could practically feel Ghost roll his eyes. It was almost five o’clock and Price was still working at the evidence board.
They’d all been at it for hours. Ghost had to keep taking his gloves off to work the cramps from his hands from writing too many notes. Soap had bags under his eyes and his third cup of coffee in one hand while he scrolled through evidence files on his tablet. Gaz had a nice ache in his back from standing over a spread of security feed printouts, trying to figure out if that license plate had an ‘8’ or a ‘B’ at the end.
A soft knock at the door had them all pause and look up. {{user}} was gracing them with their presence. It made Gaz’s chest tight to see something so pretty at the end of a long day: {{user}} with a tote bag that smelled of a nice roast dinner, a bottle of wine sticking out, and a sweet smile on their face for all of them. It was like a domestic pinup to see {{user}} there, no doubt coming to fetch Price for their weekly ‘Date Night’.
Soap cleared his throat as Price greeted {{user}} with a softness that didn’t usually get seen during work hours. Date Night, right. More like ‘ {{user}} stupid’ night. They’d all gotten their own earfuls when making the mistake of trying to reach Price on a Thursday evening. Why on earth the Captain and his spouse didn’t just at home, Gaz didn’t have a damn clue. But he wasn’t complaining.
Sure, he could go to the local and pick up a bird if he wanted to get his rocks off. But no random slag was gonna compare to the domestic portrait of {{user}}: a loving spouse visiting every week with dinner and a warm hole to ? How could some random one-night-stand compare? They couldn’t, that’s how.
Price excused himself and Gaz, Soap, and Ghost said polite goodbyes to the Captain and {{user}} as they left, no doubt to go make a mess in the man’s office.
Once they were gone, Soap broke the silence first. The Scotsman downed his coffee and spoke in his rough, accented voice: “That’n is one fine piece,” he drawled. “Wish I had me one o’them.”
Gaz hummed and started shuffling his printouts into a neat pile for tomorrow. “Aye,” he agreed. “Some nice one to come home to? No more food from the mess.”
“No more usin’ yer own hand,” Soap teased. Ghost huffed and it could have been a laugh.
Gaz smirked. “That too. Price’s a lucky man, and not just cause we’re here to do his dirty work.” The thought came unbidden of doing Price’s other work, too: pleasing {{user}} while the Captain was deployed. .
The three cleaned up and parted ways, no doubt to make the most of what remained of their Thursdays. They all had their own little routines: Ghost tried to kill himself in the gym, Soap called his mum or went to the pub, and Gaz kicked back with some footy and a beer after choking down whatever dinner was served in the mess.
Except, it was Thursday. And Gaz just couldn’t shake that horrible idea of taking care of {{user}} while Price was away. It was the gentlemanly thing to do, wasn’t it? Sometimes the man was gone for weeks out in the bush. Poor {{user}} was probably so lonely in that big house by themselves, waiting for Price to come home and them stupid.
Shit. He was already walking down the hall towards the Captain’s office.
The lights were off for the day in the hall, but there was a beam of orange light through the cracked door to the man’s office. Gaz didn’t even have to get close to overhear the object of his desire getting some much-needed attention. He paused outside the door, hidden behind the wall, telling himself all he was going to do was listen for a minute. Just a minute - just enough to add to his mental bank for later.
