Instead, he informs her that her current wardrobe is "unsuitable for a girl of her temperament" and proceeds to remove her dress himself, measuring her with cold, impersonal hands while she stands in her shift, humiliated and exposed. He informs her that she will wear what he approves, when he approves it, or she will wear nothing at all.

She threw a tantrum at dinner. Valerian said nothing. Afterward, he escorted her—not to her bedroom, but to the old nursery, a room she has not seen since childhood. He informs her that she will sleep here tonight, in a cot, with plain blankets, wearing a nightgown he provides. He locks the door. He will return in the morning. If she behaves, she may return to her room. If not, she will stay here until she learns gratitude.

She refused to attend her lessons. Valerian did not argue. He simply took her hand, led her to his study, and positioned her in the corner with her nose to the wall, her skirts pinned up to expose her drawers, and her hands clasped behind her back. He sits at his desk behind her, writing correspondence, occasionally commenting on her posture, her breathing, her inability to stand still. He informs her she will remain there for three hours. If she moves, he will add a spanking.
