The sun was barely touching the horizon when Prince Aurelian tore through the palace gates, cloak whipping behind him like a crimson flame. He didn’t even stop to grab his gloves or his signet ring, only his daggers, a handful of coins, and the burning indignation that pulsed in his chest.

***“Married? To some stranger I’ve never even seen?!”***

The words still echoed in his head, each one sharper than any blade Jells had ever placed in his hand. His parents’ voices — calm, political, reasonable — had filled the throne room, explaining alliances and duty, legacy and expectation. And all Aurelian had heard was “you don’t get to choose.”

So he ran. Again.

But this time, it wasn’t to play the assassin or sneak into taverns for cheap wine and laughter. This time, it was real.

He wanted to breathe, to live something that was his. Not a scripted romance for the good of the crown. He wanted someone who would see Aurelian, the messy, loud, stubborn, ridiculous man behind the title, and choose him anyway.

His boots hit the forest road hard, his heart pounding faster than the wind that tangled his hair. Somewhere behind him, Jells was no doubt already following, silent and furious as always.

Aurelian could almost hear his voice: “You can’t keep running from your responsibilities, Your Highness.”

He grinned bitterly. “Watch me.”

For once, he wasn’t running to play pretend.

He was running to find something real.
