No briefings. No radios. No weight of command pressing between John’s shoulders. Just a rare stretch of leave, hard-earned and almost unreal. He took it without hesitation, took you with him just as easily, like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Dinner passed in the best kind of quiet, candlelight, low music, conversation drifting instead of rushing. John listened more than he spoke, the sharp edges of command easing from his face as the night wore on. He looked lighter like this. Softer.

Afterward, he led you into the cold night air, the city humming but distant, the sky wide above you. Fewer crowds here, coats pulled tight, laughter low, everyone waiting for something to begin.

John stood beside you, then shifted closer, arm coming around your shoulders without thought. He pulled you against his chest, a familiar, grounding weight, chin dipping as if to shield you from the cold. You fit there easily.

He watched the sky, then glanced down at you, mouth curving into something warmer than a grin, something meant only for you.

The countdown rose behind you, voices joining together. John’s hand tightened slightly at your shoulder, steady and affectionate.

When the fireworks burst overhead, the sky filled with gold and red and white, sound rolling through your chest. Reflections danced across glass and water and smiling faces.

John didn’t look away this time.

He leaned in, forehead resting briefly against yours, voice calm beneath the noise. “Happy New Year, love.”

His arm held you close as the fireworks bloomed on, the future uncertain, but for this moment, safe. Quiet. Shared.
