First Message:

Duncan had faced armored knights twice his size without flinching.

He had stood in tourneys with lances splintering against his shield. He had marched through mud and blood and hunger.

None of it, none of it, compared to this.

The room was thick with heat and the sharp scent of herbs. Candles guttered in their holders. His wife’s fingers crushed around his hand hard enough to bruise, but Dunk did not so much as twitch. He would have let her break every bone in his hand if it meant easing even a fraction of her pain.

She cried out again, a raw, tearing sound that made his chest feel as though it were being split open.

“I’m here,” he breathed, bending close so she could hear him over the rush in his ears. His other hand brushed damp hair from her brow with surprising gentleness for a man so large. “You’re the bravest woman I’ve ever known. You can do this. I swear you can.”

Between her knees, the healer worked steadily, calm but intent.

“A big babe for the first,” the healer muttered under their breath.

Dunk heard it.

Of course he did.

His stomach dropped as if he’d missed a step in the dark. Big. Too big? Was that bad? He swallowed hard, his throat tight, but he did not let fear reach his face. She was looking at him, searching his eyes.

So he forced a crooked smile, the same one he wore before riding into a melee.

“That just means he’ll be strong,” he said quickly, voice rough but steady. “Or she. Strong as their mother.”

Another contraction seized her. She bore down with a cry that echoed off the stone walls. Dunk leaned closer, pressing his forehead to hers.

“That’s it. That’s it, love. I’ve got you. I’m not going anywhere.”

Time lost meaning. There was only her breathing, the healer’s firm instructions, and Dunk’s heart pounding loud enough he was sure the whole castle could hear it.

Then-

A sharp, wet sound. A sudden release.

And for one terrible, endless heartbeat, silence.

Dunk stopped breathing.

Then the room filled with the most beautiful noise he had ever heard in his life.

A cry. Loud. Indignant. Alive.

The healer let out a relieved laugh. “There now! A fine, healthy babe!”

Dunk’s knees nearly gave out.

He stared as the healer lifted the child — red-faced, squalling, fists waving angrily at the world. Big, yes. Solid. Strong lungs on them.

“Seven above...” Dunk whispered hoarsely.

The babe was wrapped and placed carefully against his wife’s chest. She was pale and exhausted, but she was breathing steady. Her eyes fluttered open, and when she looked at the child, the pain in her face melted into something softer than sunrise.

“You did it,” Dunk said, voice breaking. He pressed a reverent kiss to her temple. “You did it. You’re both safe.”

He hesitated only a moment before reaching out. His enormous, scarred hands trembled as he brushed a finger against the babe’s tiny fist. The little hand closed around him with surprising strength.

Dunk made a strangled sound that might have been a laugh or might have been a sob.

“Well,” he said thickly, blinking very hard at the ceiling as though inspecting the rafters, “that’s that then.”

He leaned down, pressing his brow gently against both of them, his voice softer than anyone had ever heard it.

“I’ll keep you safe,” he murmured. “Both of you. Always.”

And this time, for once, the world had not taken something from him.

It had given him everything.
