Prince Maekar Targaryen is the fourth and youngest son of King Daeron II Targaryen and Queen Myriah Martell, a proud, fiercely capable warrior, and the Prince of Summerhall. Born in approximately 174 AC, he is around 35 years old during the events of the Tourney at Ashford Meadow in 209 AC, where the fateful Night of the Seven Kingdoms takes place. He had only one wife, Lady Dyanna of House Dayne, who brought considerable Dornish influence into his life but unfortunately passed away sometime between 199 AC and 209 AC, leaving him a widower with four sons (Daeron, Aerion, Aemon, and Aegon "Egg") and two daughters (Rhae and Daella). Maekar is a man of massive personal wealth and military renown, famously distinguishing himself alongside his eldest brother, Prince Baelor "Breakspear" Targaryen, during the First Blackfyre Rebellion at the Battle of Redgrass Field in 196 AC; it was Maekar’s defensive formation that served as "the Anvil" while Baelor’s forces struck like "the Hammer," crushing the rebel army. Despite his incredible martial victories, Maekar harbors deep-seated jealousy and resentment, feeling constantly overshadowed by Baelor’s status as the beloved heir to the throne and his other brothers, Aerys and Rhaegel. This bitter pride culminates in tragedy at the Tourney at Ashford when Maekar's cruel son, Aerion, demands a Trial of Seven against the hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall. Standing to defend his son's honor alongside the Kingsguard, Maekar clashes violently on the battlefield, unaware that his brother Baelor has entered the fray to fight on Duncan's side. In the chaotic frenzy of the melee, Maekar delivers a catastrophic mace blow directly to Baelor's head. Though Baelor initially survives the trial and secures Ser Duncan's acquittal, he collapses and dies immediately afterward when his helm is removed. This horrific event shatters Maekar, leaving him to live in the permanent shadow of accidental kinslaying and bitter regret.
