The dungeons always smelled of damp earth and old iron, but today, they smelled of copper. Your knights had dragged the Rival's prize soldier into the deepest cell, chained to the wall like a rabid beast. They called him 'Ghost,' a butcher who had traded his cleaver for a broadsword. Standing outside the rusted bars, looking at his bruised, unyielding form, you realized the stories hadn't done him justice.

Before he was a monster in a mask, he was just Simon. He had spent years in a sleepy, border-town village, a quiet colossus who handled the heavy cleavers at the local slaughterhouse. He knew the precise geometry of bone and muscle, how to separate flesh with a single, practiced stroke, and how to bleed a carcass dry without wasting a drop. He was a man of few words, content with the heavy, rhythmic thud of his blade against the wood blocks.

But when the rival kingdom’s conscription officers swept through the territory, they didn't see a simple tradesman. They saw a giant with dead eyes and terrifyingly efficient hands. They dragged him from the blood-soaked floors of the butcher shop and shoved a heavy broadsword into his grip.

He adapted to the battlefield with a sickening ease. To Simon, a battlefield was just a larger, louder slaughterhouse. He began wearing a piece of bone and linen over his face—a makeshift skull mask that earned him the moniker 'Ghost.'

The skirmish at the Whispering Ridge was supposed to be a decisive victory for your kingdom, but Ghost had turned the muddy valley into a meat market.

You had watched from the safety of the ridge as the skull-masked vanguard tore through your front lines. He didn't fight with the chivalric grace of a knight; he fought with the brutal, exhausting momentum of a man harvesting wheat. A swing of his massive sword shattered a shield; a heavy, iron-toed boot crushed a breastplate. For a terrifying hour, it seemed like your forces would break.

But even a giant tires.

Surrounded, out-numbered, and bleeding from a dozen shallow cuts, Ghost was finally brought down. It took six of your heaviest cavalrymen to tackle him into the mud. Even then, as they pinned his limbs and smashed the hilt of a sword against his temple, he didn't scream. He only grunted, a low, animal sound, before his eyes rolled back and he went limp.

Now, he belonged to your crown.

The guards held their breath as you stepped into the torchlight of the subterranean cell, your heavy, fur-lined royal cloak sweeping over the damp stone. A monarch did not belong in the dirt, yet here you were, the absolute authority of the realm, standing before a caged animal.

Ghost was suspended by heavy cuffs, his knees dragging in the dirt, his massive chest rising and falling in slow, ragged breaths. They had stripped him of his armor, leaving him in a torn, blood-stained tunic that showed the terrifying expanse of his scarred shoulders. The skull mask was gone, confiscated by the captain of the guard, revealing a face lined with old burns, a heavy jaw covered in rough stubble, and eyes that were completely, utterly devoid of fear.

As the gold trim of your robes caught the light, his head snapped up. Dark eyes locked onto yours through a curtain of tangled, dirty brown hair.

He didn't bow. He didn't beg. He looked at your crown, then down to your pristine boots, and let out a low, raspy chuckle that sounded like grinding stones.

"They sent the whole damn throne down here just for me?" Ghost muttered, his voice rough from smoke and screaming on the battlefield. He rattled his chains, a deliberate, mocking gesture. "I'm flattered, Your Majesty. Didn't know a king's bloodhound could scare the ruler right out of their palace."

He was battered, bleeding, and entirely at your mercy—one word from you could have his head on a spike by dawn. Yet, looking into those dead, defiant eyes, you realized this butcher wasn't going to break easily. In fact, he looked like he was daring you to try.
