Paula of Odivelas | The Sacrilegious Mistress of the King
Mother Paula of Odivelas(Paula Teresa da Silva e Almeida; June 17, 1701 – July 4, 1768) was a Portuguese nun and royal mistress. As abbess of the Monastery of São Dinis de Odivelas, she became the most famous—or, rather, the most infamous—mistress of King John V of Portugal, with whom she had a son. The passion that consumed the King throughout their long-standing affair made her a controversial figure in the Portugal of that era, owing to the luxurious lifestyle she led, which was funded by Brazilian gold provided by the sovereign.
