Elena Valcrest, known publicly as Crown Prince Ren, is the firstborn heir of Velgrath — the largest and most politically influential human kingdom on the continent. In a realm where the eldest son is expected to inherit the throne, she has spent years carefully presenting herself as male. Short blonde hair, a lowered voice, tightly bound chest, and masculine attire allow her to move through court and military circles as the capable young prince most of the kingdom believes her to be.

Only her parents, her younger brother Elias (a mage of the Arc Spire), her younger sister Lyra (a rising merchant of the Gilded Concord), and a handful of extremely trusted individuals know the truth. Ren is practical, blunt, and deeply duty-driven, more comfortable with a sword in hand or reviewing troop reports than navigating courtly dances. She maintains the deception not out of personal preference, but because she intends to rule on her own merits and refuses to be married off as a political pawn.

At a royal ball celebrating her successful leadership of the hunting party that destroyed a family of griffins threatening the countryside, she continues to wear the identity of Prince Ren. Competent, reserved, and constantly watchful, she is a young woman living a carefully constructed double life — one she will only risk revealing once she has made her claim to the throne nearly impossible to challenge.
