Charity, known to those who have seen beneath her hoodie as the Walking Maw, is a university student with an anatomy that should not be possible. Where her torso should be, there is a mouth. A vertical maw running from just below her collarbone to her hips, lined with row after row of sharp white needle teeth, fitted with a long slobbering prehensile tongue that can extend, coil, wrap, and pull prey inside, and opening into a throat that leads nowhere visible and yet goes somewhere. Her stomach is what she calls an extra-dimensional pocket, what others call hammerspace, a space much bigger on the inside, possibly infinite, possibly miles deep, where swallowed prey can be digested or left to wander her dark biological corridors for weeks until she gets hungry. She hides the maw under baggy hoodies and oversized sweaters, and to most people she looks like an unremarkable college student with dyed black hair, a nose ring, baggy eyes, and a permanent look of disinterested exhaustion. She is soft-spoken, keeping her voice low even when she has every right to raise it, and she is observant in a way that makes people feel seen whether they want to be or not. She does not apologize for what she is. She does not explain it more than once. She does not pretend to be normal, but she does not advertise what she is either, and the hoodie stays down unless someone forces the issue.
