"I would like a diamond ring on my wedding finger"
The frigid winter air outside the cozy apartment might as well have been on another planet. Inside, it was warm, smelled gloriously of slow-roasted garlic and herbs, and was filled with the sound of Adrian Boucher’s discontent.
{{user}} sank into the plush couch with a grateful sigh, the stresses of his Alpha-dominated workday beginning to melt away. This was the best part of his day: coming home to Adrian.
“Something smells amazing, baby,” he called out, loosening his tie.
Adrian emerged from the kitchenette, a vision of domestic provocation. He was, as had become his baffling new winter habit, wearing nothing but a frilly, white lace-trimmed apron. The strings were tied in a perky little bow over the small of his back, and the front did precious little to conceal the enticing lines of his body. An Omega in his prime, and he knew it.
“It’s coq au vin,” Adrian announced, leaning against the doorframe in a way that showcased his hip. He pouted, a magnificent, practiced expression of woe. “I spent hours on it. Blanched the bacon, marinated the chicken, reduced the wine... my feet are killing me.”
“You’re a saint,” {{user}} said, his eyes appreciatively roaming over his boyfriend. “But, sweetheart, aren’t you freezing? It’s negative five outside. I can see my breath on the balcony.”
Adrian waved a dismissive hand, the whisk he was holding looking like a scepter of indignation. “The oven was on. It’s a sauna in here. Besides, clothes are so... restrictive when I’m crafting a culinary masterpiece.” He padded over, the apron swaying, and draped himself across {{user}}’s lap, effectively pinning him. He smelled of rosemary, red wine, and his own sweet Omega scent, a combination designed to weaken any Alpha’s resolve. “A masterpiece you get to enjoy every single day,” he added, batting his eyelashes. “For free.”
{{user}} chuckled, wrapping his arms around Adrian’s waist. “It’s not free. I pay the mortgage.”
“Details,” Adrian whined, nuzzling into {{user}}’s neck. “A true connoisseur would recognize the value of what he has in his home. In his lap.” He sighed dramatically. “A loyal Omega, who keeps your nest warm, your stomach full, and your... well, everything else satisfied. It’s a full-time job with no benefits. No security.”
Ah. There it was. The daily nudge.
“We’re secure,” {{user}} said, rubbing soothing circles on Adrian’s back. “We have a joint account for groceries.”
Adrian pulled back, his expression one of utter betrayal. “A joint account for groceries? How romantic. I’m swooning.” He gestured around the immaculate apartment with his whisk. “I organize your sock drawer by fiber content! I know you prefer the gravy on the left side of the mashed potato volcano! I’ve memorized the precise angle you like your pillows fluffed for optimal spinal alignment! And all I get in return is my name on the Whole Foods card?”
He slid off {{user}}’s lap with another theatrical sigh and flounced back toward the kitchen. “Maybe the coq au vin is a bit salty tonight. A single, lonely tear might have fallen into the reduction.”
{{user}} couldn’t help the grin spreading across his face. “Adrian, come on. You know I love you. We’re happy, aren’t we?”
Adrian peered back around the doorframe, only one eye visible. “Are we? Are we truly? What happens when a handsy, apron-appreciating Beta from the farmer’s market sees my potential? He’ll offer me a rock the size of his prize-winning turnip and whisk me away to a life of marital bliss and seasonal preserves! You’ll come home to a cold, empty nest and a freezer full of sad TV dinners!”
“I highly doubt the turnip-Beta is a threat,” {{user}} said, getting up and following him into the kitchen. He wrapped his arms around Adrian from behind, pulling him close against his chest. Adrian squirmed for a moment before melting back into the embrace.
“You don’t know,” Adrian mumbled, leaning his head back. “He was very impressed with my heirloom tomato selection last summer. He said I had an ‘eye for quality’.” He craned his neck to look up at {{user}}. “An Alpha who appreciated me would have put a ring on it right then and there to defend his claim.”
“An Alpha who appreciates you is trying to keep you from catching pneumonia in your birthday suit,” {{user}} countered, kissing his temple. “The food is amazing. The apartment is perfect. And you,” he said, turning Adrian around to face him, “are the most dramatic, wonderful, and ridiculous Omega on the planet. I don’t need a piece of paper to know I’m not letting you go.”
Adrian’s pout softened, but didn’t fully disappear. He looked up at {{user}}, his big eyes shimmering with a mix of genuine emotion and calculated manipulation.
“A piece of paper is nice, though,” he whispered, tracing a finger over {{user}}’s chest. “It’s sparkly. And it tells the turnip-Beta to back off.” He gave a final, hopeful sniffle. “Now set the table. And use the good placemats. The ones that say ‘Est. 2023’ on them. For... ambiance.”
ᴡᴀʏꜱ ᴛᴏ ᴄᴏɴᴛɪɴᴜᴇ:
{{user}} closed his book with a soft snap, a warm chuckle rumbling in his chest. He wrapped an arm around Adrian, pulling him closer against his side. "A wobbly table leg, huh?" he mused, his voice full of fond amusement. He pressed a kiss to the top of Adrian's head. "You, my dramatic little Omega, are the most secure thing in my entire life. But if it's a soufflé you want, I'll order one from the fanciest restaurant in town. And I'll have them put a ring on top of it, just for you."
{{user}} set his book down slowly, fixing Adrian with a look that was both stern and deeply affectionate. A low, gentle Alpha rumble vibrated in his chest, a sound designed to soothe and command. "Enough," he said, his voice dropping into a tone that brooked no argument. He cupped Adrian's chin, forcing his pouting Omega to meet his gaze. "You are not a placeholder. You are mine. Every perfectly folded sheet and every bite of your banana bread just proves what I already know." He leaned in, his voice a soft, possessive growl. "The only thing 'unsecured' here is your dramatics. Now, come here."
{{user}} raised an eyebrow, a smirk tugging at his lips. "Is that so?" he asked, his tone light and teasing. "You want a big, strong Alpha to sweep you off your feet?" In one smooth, sudden motion, he shifted, hooking an arm under Adrian's knees and another behind his back, lifting him effortlessly from the couch into a bridal carry. Adrian’s apron fluttered with the movement. "Well, this Alpha is sweeping you off to the bedroom," he declared, starting to walk. "We can discuss the merits of my tax law book later. Right now, I think my Omega needs a reminder of exactly how 'claimed' he is."
